(POLAND). Letter from the Irgun Lomdei Yeshivot Polin in Tel Aviv, to the Jewish community of MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA. Issued in Yiddish by RABBI YITZCHAK YEDIDIA FRANKEL.
Sent a month following the Nazi invasion of Poland, this emotional plea begs support for those suffering from privation (“a Gemara in one hand and a rifle in the other.”) Underlined twice, “S.O.S.” is penned at the top.

The Irgun Lomdei Yeshivot Polin (Association of Students of Polish Yeshivoth) was founded by Rabbi Yitzchak Yedidia Frankel at the behest of his teacher, the martyred Rabbi Menachem Zemba (1883-1943). An alumni association for those who had studied in the yeshivot of Poland, it was especially associated with the famed Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin.
Rabbi Frankel (1913-86) emigrated to Eretz Israel in 1935. He served as the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv-Jaffa for 40 years.
