This miniature book is a beautifully handwritten copy of the first three sections of Chaim Selig Slonimski’s Yesodei Chochmat Ha-shiur (Zhitomir, 1865). The sections are on Numbers, Arithmetic and Algebra. The pages here are a copy of the first 63 pages, or about one third of the published work.
Slonimski’s book, which also bears the German title Anfangsgründe der Gesamten Mathematik, (The Rudiments of All Mathematics), was part of a series of Hebrew books on math and the sciences through which Slonimski (1810-1904) guided generations of East European Jewish youth who had received a traditional Jewish education, and the Hebrew fluency that came with it, to acquire secular knowledge as well, without necessarily having possessed the ability to study secular books written in a European language.
Neither the name of the copyist nor owner, who might have been one and the same, appear in the volume here, but as fine a work it is, it was surely a proud possession.
