(GOREN, SHLOMO). HaVaad LeHatzalath HaRabanuth. HaMa’aracha al HaTzalath HaRabanuth BeYisrael Vehasakana…shel HaRav Shlomo Goren [polemic].
pp. 32. Original printed wrappers. 8vo.
Jerusalem, Akiva Yoseph, 1972.
Issued by the Committee to Rescue the Rabbinate, this pamphlet opens with a sharply worded announcement endorsed by seven leading Rabbis including R. Yechezkel Abramsky, R. Eliezer Menachem Shach, R. Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky (the Steipler), R. Yoseph Shalom Elyashiv and R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, stating that it is prohibited to rely on any of Rabbi Goren’s rabbinic rulings. This is followed by a history of Rabbi Goren’s statements in many areas especially pertaining to Mamzerim and conversion issues.
As the first head of the military Rabbinate of the Israel Defense Forces, and later the third Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel (1973-83), R. Goren took many bold positions, attempting to reconcile Jewish religious teachings with modern issues of state and governance. However his often uncompromising personality resulted in his becoming a polarizing and controversial figure within traditional quarters.
